During the mid-1920s Beatrice and William travelled together in Southern Europe, staying in ''La Petite Maison'' in Cassis on the French Mediterranean coast and also returning to Spain where William Macdonald had travelled extensively prior to their marriage. This watercolour depicts a narrow street of the small medieval town of Albarracin in the hills of Aragon, east-central Spain. Here the strong shadows thrown by the bright sunshine are rendered in a simplified patchwork of blocks of colour, flattening the depth of field in a manner that recognises a Cubist influence.
