William Brown - William Marshall Brown RSA RSW (1863- 1936)Born and died in Edinburgh. Painter mainly in oil but also watercolour; fruit, figurative and landscapes. He is probably best known for his coastal landscapes and genre paintings. He had a studio in Cockburnspath from which he produced much of his best works. He attended evening classes at Edinburgh School of Art and at the Royal Scottish Academy Life School whilst working as a wood engraver and book illustrator. He won the Chalmers Bursary and Stewart Prize. He was also awarded a bronze medal for anatomical studies at South Kensington. Most of his exhibited work was in oil. Exhibted at the RA 2, RSA 171, RSw 45, GI 78, RCA 3, and L 19.
