This study relates closely to Beatrice's A Muleteer from Andalucia. The sitter is certainly the same and is dressed in the same yellow collarless jacket with a similar hat. Using brush strokes as notation, she captures the muleteer resting from his work. There is an immediacy in his direct gaze which suggests that she painted him from life, the strong blue shadows conveying the intensity of the Spanish afternoon sunshine. The relative informality of the painting shows this to be a sketch for the more finished portrait.
The finished portrait is now in the National Galleries of Scotland's Collection.
