WILLIAM MACDONALD (1883 - 1960)
Self Portrait

1920s · oil on canvas · 72.5 x 59 cm
Verso signed 'Mac...' in pencil
Framed, with contemporary gilt frame

Exhibited: The Scottish Gallery, 1990, cat. no.12

Macdonald submitted a painting entitled The Artist
- presumably a self-portrait - to the RSA annual exhibition of 1911, when he would have been only 28. This self-portrait appears to be a little later and the sitter perhaps slightly older. The boldly modelled face and dapper dress, the three-piece suit and trilby hat, along with the set of the head, recall F.C.B. Cadell's portrait of William Macdonald, painted in the mid-1920s, and this self-portrait may be of similar date. The canvas ground is left partially exposed giving an informal finish.
