The indistinct pencil inscription confirms that this is a portrait of Beatrice and William's son Julius, born in 1929, as a young boy. The inscription 'Macdonald' painted in red to his lapel, much like a school woven name tape, serves to identify the sitter rather than the artist. In style it is similar to Macdonald's Young Girl with Bob - both capture a quality of innocence with sensitive handling of the sitters' features and a use of fresh, clear tones. The periphery is left unfinished, allowing the white canvas to suggest his shirt and focusing our gaze onto the boy's face.
