Grouse are a subject Hamish often returns to. Arguably the king of game birds, the red grouse is native to Britain and inhabits upland heather moorland. They fly low and fast, at speeds of up to 80 mph, often changing direction suddenly.

This dynamic sculpture shows a pair of grouse in flight. Hamish enjoys the challenge of sculpting birds, interpreting the feathers into clay. For this sculpture he used a carcass to further study the wing shape and number of feathers. The other challenge was to create a pleasing composition that shows the grouse in flight without appearing to be supported.

Hamish also made Grouse Flushing 2019 at the same time and together they make a great pair. These sculptures are suitable for placing inside or out and would make a great gift for lovers of country sports and wildlife.
