BEATRICE HUNTINGTON (1889 - 1988)
Edwin Bramwell Esq Md Lld Frcp London

Past President, Royal College of Physicians, London
1940 · oil on canvas · 84 x 88.5 cm
Signed and dated, lower right, 'Beatrice M.L. Huntington 1940' Unframed

Exhibited: Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition, 1940

The work, now loose on its stretcher, has suffered extensive damage. The way the paint is lifting suggests that the canvas may not have been properly primed. It may be that acquiring the correct artist's supplies became difficult during the war. Black and white photographs in the archive, with Beatrice's signature and the title inscribed in her hand on the verso, show the portrait in better condition (BH3/5/6) as it would have been at the time of its submission to the RSA Annual Exhibition. Although the portrait was submitted to the RSA with the sitter named as above, Edwin Bramwell was in fact a professor. In 1907 he was appointed Assistant Physician at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, then Full Physician (1919), and finally Moncrieff- Arnott Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University in 1922.
