CHARLES OPPENHEIMER RSA RSW 1875-1961

Few Scottish artists are so closely associated with a town or location as Charles Oppenheimer is with Kirkcudbright. He was however not a native Scot having been born in Manchester and only settling in the town when in his mid thirties.

Other artists of the Kirkcudbright School, Hornel, MacGeorge and Mouncey found their subject matter in the surrounding Galloway landscape and paid little attention to the beautiful old town where they lived. Oppenheimer as a keen fisherman also spent many hours on the local rivers and lochs, but he produced his best and most memorable work painting in Kirkcudbright itself.
